Save Power, Save Money, and Fight Climate Change with LED Lighting

If you’ve been keeping up to date with the news, you’ll have seen the stories about this year’s Nobel prize for Physics going to the 3 Japanese scientists who developed an LED capable of producing bright blue light. The invention of the blue LED has truly revolutionised lighting technology throughout the world, and here at Nu-Light, we think that their Nobel prize is incredibly well deserved.

Blue light emitting diodes

Although red and green LEDs have been around for decades, blue light LED is a relatively recent progression. Without blue light, it would be impossible for the white light used in general lighting to be created. Since the first blue LED was created, a huge amount of progress has been made, meaning that an LED lamp today will produce 300 lumens of light per watt. To put this into perspective, LEDs are about 20 times as efficient as incandescent lamps and four times as efficient as the fluorescent tube.

LEDs: The Future of Lighting

Christian Wetzel, a physicist at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York said: “Blue LEDs, in combination with red and green LEDs (which had been discovered previously), make it possible to produce white light. This kind of lighting is much more energy-efficient and has a longer life span than conventional incandescent lights.” LED lighting is also incredibly flexible. It can be used in arrays of all different sizes, and is suitable for every possible use of light, from soft mood lighting to security lighting and stadium floodlights.

According to research by Digitimes, the global demand for LED lighting products and LED-based lighting systems and services in 2018 will increase from 2013 by 190% and 180%, respectively, and global demand for LED lighting will begin to exceed that for conventional lighting products in 2017. This is an enormous increase; suggesting that the future of LED lighting is very bright!
